Audemars Piguet Royal Oak

The Royal Oak is the watch that invented the luxury steel sports watch, and arguably the most important watch design of the last fifty years. When Gerald Genta drew it in 1972, a steel watch priced like a gold one was near-scandalous, but it worked, and half the industry has been chasing it ever since. You'll know it instantly by three things: an octagonal bezel with eight exposed screws, an integrated bracelet that flows straight out of the case, and the "Tapisserie" waffle-textured dial. It runs from 34 to 41mm, with the thin "Jumbo" as the purist's favorite. Steel versions are in such demand they routinely sell above retail, and the 2026 Swatch "Royal Pop" collaboration put the AP name in front of a far broader crowd than a six-figure watch ever could. It's the icon the whole brand orbits.
